Frequently Asked Questions

How do I mount the Turbo NAS shared folders on Mac OS?
  1. On Mac Finder, choose “Go” > “Connect to Server”
  2. Two options to mount the shared folders:
    • AFP: type serverip or afp://serverip
    • SMB: type smb://serverip or servername
      eg. 169.254.100.100 or smb://169.254.100.100
  3. Click “Connect”
Why can’t I log in with a user? I already gave the user RW or RO access right. (Why can I write data on a shared folder? I already gave the user RW access right.)
The answers to the above two questions are the same; the access right priority:

Deny > RW > RO > Empty (no setting).

Example 1:

“UserA” is a member of “UserGroup”. If you give “UserA” RW or RO access right to “Public” shared folder and at the same time you give “UserGroup” Deny to “Public”, per the access rule above, resulting access right for “UserA” is Deny

Example 2:

“UserB” is a member of “UserGroup”. If you give “UserB” RO access right to “Qmultimedia” shared folder and at the same time you give “UserGroup” RW access right to “Qmultimedia” shared folder, per the access rule above, resulting access right for “UserB” is RW.

Example 3:

“UserC” is a member of “UserGroupA” and “UserGroupB”. For shared folder “Qdownload” you give “UserGroupA” RW, “UserGroupB” RO, and you do not configure “UserC” (Empty), the resulting access right for “UserC” is RW.

Note: All users are in group “everyone” by default, please check your “everyone” access right for conflicts

Which port does NFS use? Can I change the port number?
The port number used by NFS is not fixed. It cannot be set by the user.
I removed all drives from the NAS and inserted new drives. Why couldn’t I create a new volume?
A new volume can’t be created because system configuration files stored in the system volume was removed when all drives were removed from the NAS.
Please Click <Reinitialize NAS> in “Control Panel” > “System Settings” > “Backup / Restore” > “Restore to Factory Default” to reinstall the NAS. After that, a new system volume can be created and disks can be managed.
Why I can’t add hard drives in RAID 1 and RAID 0 on the Turbo NAS?
The Turbo NAS does not support adding hard drives for RAID 1 and RAID 0 disk configurations.
Will snapshot affect performance, and by how much?
After taking a snapshot, the volume/LUN performance may be affected according to the size and number of files in the snapshot. If the written data is more scattered, the performance impact may be noticeable (between 5%~30%.) If you require constant high performance, you may opt not to use the snapshot function to ensure a stable performance level.
How to back up data from an Rsync-compatible server to QNAP Turbo NAS?
You can use the “Rsync Server” in “Backup Station” to back up data to QNAP Turbo NAS. If you have any problem using this feature, please check the settings below:

  1. Make sure you are using the latest version of Rsync. To download the latest version, please visit http://rsync.samba.org/.
  2. Make sure that the option “Allow remote Rsync server to back up data to NAS” is enabled in “Backup Station” > “Backup Server” > “Rsync Server”, and the username and password are both correct.
  3. Make sure that the port used by the Rsync server is set correctly (the default port is “873”.)
Why I can’t use Windows Server Backup with the QNAP Turbo NAS?
This is an SMB issue. Windows Server Backup will fail in some conditions. Please refer to the table below.

If the error message is “The specified backup disk cannot be found”, please try the following solution.

  1. Use a compatible third-party backup tool. For more information, please visit www.qnap.com.
  2. Create or attach a vhd(x) file as a local drive (diskmgmt.msc). Then use “Windows Server Backup” to specify this local drive as destination type.
Why can’t I use Windows 7 File Recovery or Windows Server Backup to back up the Windows OS to the Turbo NAS?
If an error message “Incorrect function” is shown when you try to back up the Windows OS to the Turbo NAS by “Windows 7 File Recovery” on Windows 8 or Windows 8.1 or by “Windows Server Backup” on Windows Server 2012 or Windows Server 2012 (R2), please follow the steps below to change the SMB version.

Turbo NAS version: QTS 4.0.5

  1. Login the Turbo NAS and go to “Control Panel” > “Network Services” > “Win/Mac/NFS” > “Microsoft Networking” > “Advanced Options”.
  2. Disable the option “Enable SMB 2”.
  3. Click “Apply”.

Turbo NAS version: QTS 4.1 or above

  1. Login the Turbo NAS and go to “Control Panel” > “Network Services” > “Win/Mac/NFS” > “Microsoft Networking” > “Advanced Options”.
  2. Select “SMB 2.0” from the Highest SMB version drop-down menu.
  3. Click “Apply”.

If the error message is “The specified backup disk cannot be found”, this is an SMB issue.  Please try the following solution.

  1. Use a compatible third-party backup tool.  For more information, please visit www.qnap.com/i/useng/product_x_grade/cat_intro.php?g_cat=7&hf=0.
  2. Create or attach a vhd(x) file as a local drive (diskmgmt.msc).  Then use “Windows 7 File Recovery” or “Windows Server Backup” to specify this local drive as destination type.
Can I revert to the previous Backup Station from Hybrid Backup Sync?
You can remove/disable Hybrid Backup Sync and use Backup Station while retaining local and remote jobs. But if Cloud Backup Sync is removed, cloud jobs and cloud account settings will also be removed. Due to functional differences between Hybrid Backup Sync and Backup Station, some options may be missing if you revert back to Backup Station after using Hybrid Backup Sync to create jobs.
Can I use NAS to NAS backup (or sync via Rsync) to back up/sync the Container Station folder?

The Container Station folder can only be backed up/synced when no containers are running. To ensure the integrity of Docker images, we recommend using the export function in Container Station to back up containers.

Why do I see some temporary files (~temp_filename) in the folder for my OneDrive for Business account on the cloud website?
OneDrive for Business will show temporary file names for files that are not yet synced to the cloud. After being synced, the file names will be correct.
